We are delighted to offer you the opportunity to join us on our fantastic tour led by Frank Mackin to the undiscovered Bulgaria.  Normally the Irish holiday in the commercialised seaside resorts on the Bulgarian Black Sea.  This tour will appeal to those who prefer to see the real Bulgaria.  We are staying for 4 nights in the Capital city of Sofia.  The city’s landmarks reflect more than 2000 years of history, including Greek, Roman, Ottoman and Soviet occupation.   The skyline of Sofia is dominated by the impressive Vitosha Mountains. It is also the most affordable Capital City in Europe.  You will be delighted that prices are so reasonable.  Visit it now before it gets too popular.

DAY 1

We depart Dublin on our direct flight to Sofia.  On arrival you will be met by your Mackin Travel tour leader and your local tour guide and transferred by coach to our hotel in Sofia.  We are based for 4 nights in the 4 star Festa Hotel in Sofia Dinner tonight and every night is in your hotel.

After breakfast we go on a panoramic coach tour around Sofia and visit the most fascinating places of interest: the forum of Ancient Serdica (the old name of the city) with archaeological discoveries from Roman times.  We visit the St. Nedelya square, where 4 places of worship of the main religions in Bulgaria are located next to each other.  These are the Orthodox Church of St. Nedalya, the Roman Catholic Church, the Synagogue and the Mosque.  They form a quadrangle, symbolizing the peace between different religions in Bulgaria.  Our tour continues with the Alexander 1 square where the Royal Palace and the National Theatre are located, the Sofia University and the Alexander Nevski Cathedral (the biggest Orthodox Church on the Balkan Peninsula.   The afternoon is free to enjoy this charming city.

We have a free day to soak up the many delights of Sofia.  When we did this trip last December some of our clients availed of an optional half day excursion to the Vitosha Mountain range where they visited the 10th century Boiana Monastery.  This is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Depending on numbers the  cost for this excursion is 20 euro per person.  Your tour leader can organise this when we do the City tour of Sofia.

After breakfast we travel by coach to Plovdiv, Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited city, even older than Rome.  The journey time is approximately 2 hours.  Today Plovdiv is the cultural centre of Bulgaria and has been selected as European Capital of Culture for 2019.  Our guide will do a short walking tour of the Old town with its cobbled streets,  ancient theatre, fortress walls, and the Roman Stadium.  Our clients particularly enjoyed the pedestrianised shopping centre with very reasonable prices. We return to Sofia late afternoon giving you plenty of time to enjoy this beautiful city.

After breakfast we depart the hotel for the airport in time for our return flight to Dublin.

We hope you will be able to travel with us and should you like to make a reservation please phone our Wexford office on 053 91 22121.  The non-refundable booking deposit is €150 per person, the balance is due payable 10 weeks before departure.
