For the first 6 nights of our holiday we will be staying in Malta, known as Gozo's big sister. It is a small island, only 22 miles long and 12 miles wide but it has a population of 380,000. Like Gozo it is steeped in history and the Irish always get a warm welcome. You will be amazed at how inexpensive the Maltese islands are.
Gozo is an absolute gem of an island, only 9 miles long and 5 miles wide. Despite its size it has an abundance of things to do and see. The population is 37,000 and 7,000 live in its capital city Victoria. There is an excellent and cheap bus service from Victoria to most parts of the island. Virtually everybody can speak English and it will remind you of Ireland 50 years ago. We will be staying for the last 3 nights on this beautiful island.
This two centre holiday is one of our most popular tours so early booking is recommended.
We depart Dublin on our direct flight to Malta. On arrival you will be met by our Mackin Travel tour leader who is leading the group and will arrange your transfer by coach to our hotel in Qawra. We will be staying for 6 nights in the 4 star Santana hotel www.hotelsantana.com , which is only a few minutes walk from the promenade. You can relax by walking along the picturesque seaside promenade. The local bus station is only 200 metres away and offers a very cheap and efficient way to travel around the island. Like most seaside resorts there are numerous shops and restaurants.
A free day to experience the beautiful resort of Qawra and surrounding resorts of St Pauls Bay and Buggiba.
After breakfast we travel by coach to the medieval hill top city of Mdina , the old capital of Malta where our local tour guide will lead us on a walking tour through the narrow streets and admire the magnificent architecture. We then proceed to the remote Westside of the island visiting the spectacular cliffs of Dingli. Our lunchtime stop is in the picturesque fishing village of Marsallox where you have an excellent choice of restaurants. . In the afternoon we travel tothe old town of Mosta where we visit its famous church and admire its huge unsupported dome. It is known locally as the Miracle Church. A German bomb fell through the roof during mass and did not explode.
We have a free day of leisure.
After breakfast we head to Maltas capital city of Valetta which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. Our local tour guide will walk us through this truly breathtaking medieval city with its fantastic views of the Grand Harbour. We can also visit St John’s Co. Cathedral where you can admire the famous Caravaggio’s masterpiece, ‘The Beheading of St John’. We return to our hotel in the late afternoon giving you plenty of time to soak up the many charms of Valetta.
We have a free day of leisure.
At 10.30am we depart for Gozo by coach. We then catch the ferry to Gozo which takes half an hour. On arrival at Gozo we are transferred to The Downtown Hotel www.downtown.com.mt in Victoria where you will spend the next 3 nights. Victoria is a gem of a city dominated by its ancient citadel. It has numerous bars, restaurants and inexpensive shops.
At 11.00 a coach will take us to Dwerja Bay on the North Gozo coast.. We will then travel by coach to the Maltese Islands most famous centre for pilgrimage, the magnificent Ta Pinu Basilica. This is a very special place for the Gozitans and Maltese. Our lunchtime stop is in the picturesque seaside resort of Xlendi on the South Gozo coast. In the afternoon we visit the charming village of Xewkija which is famous for its magnificent church. Its Dome is the 4th largest in the world.
