We are delighted to offer a tour to Croatia, Slovenia and Hungary. Our base for 5 nights is in the beautiful capital city of Croatia, Zagreb. Although it is a major European capital it does not get the number of tourists it deserves, which is a real shame, because it has plenty to offer. The thousand year old Upper Town contains the Presidential Palace, the iconic St Marks Catholic Cathedral, the Croatian Parliament, and museums and galleries which are all set in cobbled streets lit by gas lamps. Zagreb is also called a city of museums as there are more of them per square foot than any other city in the world. It is also a very safe and friendly city where the Irish always get a very warm welcome. You will be pleased that it is also very reasonable for shopping and eating out. The Irish have already
discovered the other three great Austro Hungarian cities, Prague Vienna and Budapest. Now is your opportunity to discover Zagreb, in Frank Mackin’s opinion it is the best of the four.
We depart Dublin Airport for our direct flight to Zadar. On arrival you are met by Frank Mackin who is leading the group. We then travel to our hotel in Zagreb where we will be staying for the next 5 nights on a bed and breakfast basis. Your hotel is the centrally located Hotel Central www.hotel-central.hr it has a perfect location directly opposite the main Railway Station. A 10 minute walk through the beautiful Zrinjevak Park will bring you to the main square and the historic centre of the city.
We have a free day to enjoy the many delights of Zagreb.
After breakfast we depart by coach for a full day excursion to Lake Balaton in Hungary (1 hour 30 minutes’ drive) it is the largest lake in Central Europe and not yet discovered by Irish/British tourists. The mountainous region of the Northern shore is a major wine region, while the Southern shore is known for its picturesque towns. Our lunchtime stop is in the lakeside town of Keszthely and in Frank Mackin’s opinion is hands down the loveliest on the lake. It is perched at the Western end of the lake and one of the most important cultural, educational and economic hubs in the region. There are excellent restaurants at very reasonable prices. The town dates back to Roman times and is surrounded by ancient forests and rolling hills.
Another free day to enjoy Zagreb.
After breakfast we depart by coach for a full day excursion to Ljubljana, capital city of Slovenia. (2 hour drive) In 2016 the European Commission awarded Ljubljana with the coveted Green Capital of Europe title. Car traffic is restricted in the historic old centre, leaving the leafy banks of the emerald – green Ljublanica River, which flows through the heart of the city, free for pedestrians. The key landmark of the city is Ljubljana Castle perched above Castle Hill for over 900 years. You will enjoy strolling around its well preserved medieval buildings now home to shops, cafes and inexpensive restaurants. It is a real gem of a city and again not very many Irish visitors.
After breakfast we say goodbye to our hosts and travel to Zadar Airport for our return flight back to Dublin.
Please note that this is our planned itinerary but sometimes due to circumstances outside our control we may have to alter it slightly.
